Free BMR Calculator

A BMR calculator estimates how many calories your body burns while resting. This energy supports basic body functions such as breathing, blood circulation, body temperature control, brain activity, and cell repair.

What Is BMR?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It is the estimated number of calories your body needs in a resting state. Even if you stayed in bed all day, your body would still need energy to keep essential systems working.

BMR Formula Used in This Calculator

This tool uses the commonly used Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which estimates BMR using weight, height, age, and gender.

Male Formula

BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A + 5

Female Formula

BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A - 161

In this formula, W means weight in kilograms, H means height in centimeters, and A means age in years.

BMR vs TDEE

BMR only estimates calories burned at rest. TDEE means Total Daily Energy Expenditure. TDEE includes your BMR plus calories burned through daily movement, exercise, and activity.

Term Meaning Use
BMR Calories your body burns at rest Basic metabolism estimate
TDEE Total calories burned with activity Weight maintenance planning
Calorie Deficit Eating fewer calories than TDEE Weight loss planning
Calorie Surplus Eating more calories than TDEE Weight gain or muscle gain planning

How to Use Your BMR Result

Your BMR is not your final daily calorie target. To estimate daily calorie needs, multiply BMR by your activity level. This gives an estimated TDEE. For weight loss, people often use a moderate calorie deficit. For weight gain, people may use a controlled calorie surplus.

Why Your Real Calories May Be Different

BMR calculators provide estimates only. Your actual calorie needs can change based on muscle mass, body fat percentage, thyroid function, medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, breastfeeding, sleep quality, stress levels, and daily activity.

BMR Calculator FAQs

What is BMR?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. It estimates how many calories your body burns at rest to support basic body functions.

Is BMR the same as daily calorie needs?

No. BMR is your estimated resting calorie burn. Daily calorie needs are usually higher because they include walking, working, exercise, digestion, and other activity.

Which formula does this BMR calculator use?

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, a commonly used formula for estimating BMR in adults.

Can I use BMR for weight loss?

BMR can help estimate your calorie needs, but weight loss planning should usually be based on TDEE, not BMR alone.

Is this BMR calculator accurate?

It gives an estimate. Actual calorie needs can vary based on muscle mass, hormones, medical conditions, medication use, and lifestyle.
